#238 – said it before and I’ll say it again – my son’s doctor’s office is awesome!  Needed an appointment one day, called when they opened, got us in a 1:o0 the same day, got some great samples, chatted about our families (because I’ve come to know her as more than just our doctor) and was out the door before I knew it!  Great service, great staff, great place!

#239 – Happy 236th birthday USMC!  I am grateful for each and every Marine, active or retired, who has sacrificed so much for our country!

#240 – Happy Veteran’s Day!  I am grateful for every military man and woman who gave so much of themselves for me, my family and our nation.  God bless all of them!

#241- grateful for my church choir!  I focus so much attention on our pastors and their message, I often take the wonderful praise music for granted.  It’s time I said thank you to the folks that get me up and moving for God!

#242- My daughter IS listening!  She shared about the thank you notes she wrote to a friend and her mother and I am so grateful for the polite and thoughtful young lady she is!

#243 – Ate at our fave restaurant Adobe Cafe (twice) and made a huge mess, but was never treated with anything less than kindness!  Love that place and their waitstaff.

#244 – thankful for the ‘rents again.  You know that saying, “it takes a village to raise a child”?  It’s certainly true for my kids!  I could NOT do it without the help of my Mom and Dad who run all of them to and fro when I can’t play bus driver!

#245 – Thankful for my sweet SIL who offered to help watch my kids for a quick errand that turned into a 3 hour ordeal! so glad she’s part of my “village” too! She’s amazing!

#236 – sharing my creative self with others isn’t always an easy thing for me to do, but I have been fortunate enough to cross paths with a super cool person who believes in what I’m making and gave me a tremendous opportunity last week.  I am so grateful for her support and feel blessed to have made such a kind and generous new friend!

#237- TMI alert!  I am one of those Twilight fanatics.  (I’ll wait while you roll your eyes)  anyhoo- I was supposed to go to the midnight showing of the new Breaking Dawn movie with a friend last Thursday, but decided sort of last minute that I’m too old to be galavanting around town that late at night and flaked out on her.  Since she’s such an awesome friend, she still loves me and I appreciate the great friend that she is!!

#238- long story, but let’s just say this, 1. My mom cracks me up and 2.  She’s my biggest cheerleader.  I’m so grateful to have her support!

#239 – Can you pronounce this word: Weihnactsmarkt?  Yea, neither can most people. It’s the HUGE annual Christmassy crafty sale in our town that showcases so many hand made and local vendors!  Since I’m ‘all about” the handmade movement, I am so thankful for this event!

@240- Our town lights up for Christmas each year and it’s become our family tradition to head down for the lighting ceremony.

I had been watching the utility workers stringing lights all week prior to the ceremony and wondered if they had ever been thanked for this service to our community.  I know what a pain in the you-know-what it is to string lights on my own home and Christmas tree and these guys were working on trees in cherry pickers!  Thought I’d drop them a line to tell them that I appreciate their hard work to make our down town so darn pretty!

#241 – I met such an inspiring person this past Saturday.  She shared about her career and her life’s dream of giving back to families of wounded soldiers.  I hope to get in touch with her and write to some of these families for the sacrifices they have made for their service person and ultimately for our country.  I’m also writing her to thank her for sharing her vision and in turn inspiring me!!

If you have ever attended a 4 year old soccer game, you’ll know that there’s very little soccer being played.  It’s mostly about which friend your standing closest to, giving the perfect high five (at any point in the game), who gets to be the one to kick it or throw it back in, snacks, waving at your Mom, Dad or grandparent on the other side of the field, and in our case, watching the train if it comes by during a game.  It’s mostly hilarious for the parents and great fun for the kids, but for the coaches, it’s a lengthy test in patience.  My husband and his buddy Dan were the brave souls who volunteered to teach, mold and coach our boys’ team this season.  For 10 weeks Dan and Mike held a weekly practice before each Saturday game.  They taught soccer fundamentals (don’t touch the ball with your hands), ran drills (with some candy rewards here and there), healthy habits (stretching – the one thing my son will tell you he learned from soccer this year), and sportsmanship (try not to cry when the other guys take the ball away).  They coached each practice and game with impressive calmness and patience, giving positive reinforcement even if the kids scored a few goals for the other team.  I’m so thankful to both of them for the tremendous job they did with The Tornadoes and hope they’ll be up for the challenge again next year!

My Mom is Superwoman.  She is literally right there whenever I need her.  She doesn’t wear a cape, but always answers her phone when I call and before I can even ask, her reply is “yes, she can help”.  It’s an amazing super power she has to be and do just what I need, when I need it.  I hope that one day I can be half the mother she is for me.

Yesterday it was, “Mom, can you pick up these 7 totally random things I really must have at the store for me?”  Sure!

Then, “Could you help me run errands around town running into stores here and there so I didn’t have to load and unload the 4 kiddos in the car?” Sure!

Then, ‘Hey, can I borrow your totally favorite crafting things and lend them out to a stranger?” Sure!

She’s truly amazing.  I have so much to learn from her!

Pancreatic cancer has the lowest relative survival rate of all the cancers tracked by both the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute; pancreatic cancer is the only one with a five-year relative survival rate in the single digits at just six percent.

My sweet and amazing friend Traci lost her sweet and amazing mother 7 years ago to Pancreatic Cancer.  Since that time she’s become a warrior in the fight against this terrible disease, supporting and volunteering for the Pan Can Action Network both here in South Texas and in her new home of New York.  I attended the first Austin Purple Stride 5k a few years ago with her and we ran together again this past Saturday in the Purple Stride San Antonio 5k.  The race was and is always so bitter sweet.  Each and every person at the race has been touched in way by this awful cancer.  There were signs and banners and t shirts of loved ones lost covering the entire race area, but we also were able to recognize and applaud the survivors that attended.  Traci’s team, the T Jo Trotters (named after her Mom, Tommye Jo) had 14 members and while I loved getting to meet and share a cool November morning with friends and her family, it was difficult not to get emotional thinking about the reason we were all together.

The San Antonio Pan Can Action Network chapter did an amazing job planning and delivering a fun and enjoyable race- from the Purple Stride t shirts, to the Silent Auction, to the band, to the Spurs Coyote and the complimentary Panera bagels.  Over $49,000 was raised with this race!  It was great to be a part of it this year and I plan on running every year for Purple Stride, Traci and Tommye Jo.

My Bonus daughter started high school this year and I think that I was more nervous about it than she was.  Would she find her classes?  Would she have any friends to sit with at lunch?  Would she trip in the hallway? (ok, I’m projecting on that one a bit)  She has absolutely loved being a freshman and I think that’s mostly because she joined the marching band.  They started practicing the month before school started and she has made lots of new friends with this group, so by the time she started school, she already had a large group to pal around with, sit with at lunch and in her classes and feel included.  Big sigh of relief for me!  She has found so much pride in her school and band and has excelled in her flute playing and I couldn’t be more proud of her.  She’s a terrific kid - I’m sure I’ve mentioned that before (heehee).

Anyhoo – her last football game of the regular season was last night and I got to watch her perform the halftime show.  Thanks to my Father In Law, I’ve been able to attend as many home games as I wanted because he bought season tickets for the family.  It was an incredibly thoughtful gesture on his part and I am so grateful I was able to experience these important performances because he “just took care of it” for us.

And yes, we are the Mighty Unicorns!  Unicorn pride is justified!  (I know, I know, Unicorns aren’t the toughest mascot, but they folks here in New Braunfels take it VERY seriously!)

that’s my girl!  The tall one in the middle!

Go Unicorns!

Are you the kind of person who can read a book at a normal pace, stopping at a reasonable hour at a certain chapter and then picking it up again when you find yourself with a little free time?  Or are you like me, obsessed with a book, reading until ridiculous hours of the morning, barely able to put it down and can find all sorts of ways to read while doing other things like making breakfast, sorting laundry, driving (kidding)?  I LOVE a good book and just recently finished one.  It was the book that Mom read for her book club at church.  She has one of those cool Kindle things, so I couldn’t borrow her book, but her friend in the club was kind enough to let me borrow her copy.  I’ve never even met her before, so I felt this gesture was extra special.  I’m writing today for the opportunity to be transported to another place, be thoroughly entertained and for trusting me to borrow a good read!

Today for lunch I enjoyed day #2 of the leftovers from the amazing shrimp boil we had on Sunday.  We don’t usually have such fun Sunday evening meals, but my generous  fisherman of a brother in law went on a shrimping trip about a month ago and gave us 3 HUGE gallon bags filled with fresh shrimp.  Besides being thankful to him for learning out to de-head a bajillion shrimp (heehee), I am so grateful for that yummy gift he gave us!  Totally thoughtful of him and totally delish for my lunch!

Happy Belated Halloween and Happy November folks!   Didya get lotsa candy last night?  My kids did and as any good parent would do, I’m going to have to give it some thorough “testing” today!  teehee!

This month we (Amerians at least) focus more of our attention to thankfulness and I’m included.  I know I haven’t been the best blogger, but that’s all changing this month.  What better time to get re-amped up to my committment of sharing my thanks once a day?  PS – I have been sharing my thanks via Facebook update, so if you’re interested in hearing my gratitudes, check out the Thank You Note Project FB page!

I’m starting this month off with a birthday thank you to one of my very best sister friends.  Traci is an amazing person and her life thus far holds quite a story.  Through her struggles, she’s become a fiercely independent and strong woman and although her heart has taken a beating, she continues to be more and more loving, giving and compassionate for all those she meet.  Her attitude towards life is an inspiration for me and I’m constantly learning from her.  However, when I first met her, I was pretty certain we would never be friends and I am SO glad I couldn’t have been more wrong.  She’s become one of my best friends and my family loves her like she were a Leach.  I am so thankful to celebrate her today!
